JP Morgan Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission
The banking leader has informed staff members assigned to its new headquarters in NYC that they have to provide their biometric data to gain entry the high-value skyscraper.
Change from Optional to Required
The investment bank had previously planned for the collection of employee biometrics at its new skyscraper to be optional.
Yet, employees of the US's largest bank who have started operations at the new headquarters since this summer have obtained communications stating that biometric entry was now "mandatory".
The Technology Behind Entry
Biometric access necessitates personnel to submit their hand geometry to gain access entry points in the entrance area rather than scanning their access passes.
Headquarters Details
The bank's headquarters, which apparently cost three billion dollars to develop, will in time act as a workplace for ten thousand employees once it is entirely staffed before year-end.
Safety Justification
The financial company did not provide a statement but it is understood that the employment of physical identifiers for access is created to make the facility safer.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exceptions for some employees who will continue to have the option to use a ID card for access, although the criteria for who will use more conventional entry methods remains unspecified.
Additional Technological Features
Complementing the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the bank has also launched the "JPMC Work" smartphone application, which serves as a virtual ID and center for employee services.
The app enables employees to manage guest registration, explore interior guides of the building and arrange in advance meals from the facility's 19 food service providers.
Security Context
The introduction of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, especially those with substantial activities in NYC, look to increase security following the shooting of the chief executive of one of the biggest American insurance companies in recent months.
Brian Thompson, the boss of the healthcare company, was the victim of the attack not far from the bank's location.
Additional Office Considerations
It is unclear if the banking institution intends to deploy physical identifier entry for personnel at its locations in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The move comes within discussion over the employment of systems to track workers by their employers, including tracking workplace presence.
In recent months, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were directed they have to report to the workplace full-time.
Management Commentary
The organization's head, the financial executive, has described JP Morgan's state-of-the-art 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.
The banker, one of the influential banking figures, lately cautioned that the probability of the financial markets facing a downturn was much more substantial than many investors anticipated.
